SALINAS – When Emile Estassi expanded Boyd’s Asphalt Services to include asphalt paving and repairs, the first person he hired to help manage increased demand was Paul Maschmeyer.
Emile had followed Paul’s long construction career through the years. The two even knew each other as teens growing up in Salinas, both attending Salinas High School.
“I’ve always looked up to Paul,” Emile said. “His integrity and honesty are bar none. You can’t find someone with more honesty and integrity than he’s got.”
Paul, an estimator/project manager, joined Boyd’s Asphalt Services in 2011 after an established career track that started in the early 1980s when he decided to become a landscape contractor.
He chose this line of work because of the hands-on nature of building new patios, decks, and fences, and the satisfaction of seeing a project come to life from just an idea to a finished masterpiece.
He branched out from landscaping to general contractor work in the 1990s and has worked as an estimator for general engineering companies since 1995. He obtained his engineering license in 2013.
Paul likes the close-knit culture of the people and businesses in Monterey County and prefers to work in the area he was born and raised. Plus, several of his family members are also in the local construction industry.
Prior to Boyd’s, he’s worked for Lister Construction, James Sommerville Inc. and Graniterock.
Boyd’s has expanded its construction services in recent years from striping parking lots to paving, seal coats and concrete work. The company has close relationships with many of the school districts throughout Monterey County, as well as HOAs and several agriculture companies.
The job board at Boyd’s is filled with projects to build parking lots, playgrounds, sports fields and driveways. From Hartnell College to Gonzales and Pebble Beach, the company has a full schedule.
Paul says he enjoys working with owners to conceptualize the design and carry out the final project.
As most of Boyd’s work comes through word-of-mouth, doing top quality work and taking care of customers is the essence of Paul’s job.
“When people trust you, that’s when you’re successful,” he said. “It’s really all about customer service and building strong relationships. I’m picky about the quality of our work, some say too picky.”
Outside of work, Paul likes to golf and gets in nine holes every Saturday morning. He also looks forward to the annual hunting trip to Siskiyou County every year with his three grown sons – Josh, Matthew and Phillip.
He and his wife Sarah, who works for Monterey County Board of Education, have been married 35 years.
